The balcony of Umbria

The territory of Montefalco

Montefalco dominates the plain of the Topino and Clitunno rivers, offering extraordinary views that change with the seasons and the light of day.
Here, the gaze embraces the Umbrian Valley as far as the Martani mountains: a panorama that has earned it the title of ‘Ringhiera dell'Umbria’ (Umbrian Balcony).
Our farm is not far from the medieval village, immersed in an area that has been dedicated to viticulture for centuries.

The soul of the territory

Every vine, a root in the heart of our land

Our eighteen hectares of vineyard, located at about 300 meters of altitude in the municipality of Montefalco, rest on sedimentary soils with a slight clay component. This combination of pedoclimatic factors creates the perfect environment for vine growth. Another two hectares are situated between Foligno and Spoleto, maintaining the same balance of soil and climate.

The vineyards, primarily oriented to the southeast, host plants that reach 40 years of age and are cultivated with the cordon spur system. Our company philosophy è is deeply connected to the protection of indigenous grape varieties, Sagrantino, Grechetto, and Sangiovese, which here find their highest expression.

Each of our vineyards tells a story, every glass contains the breath of this land.

An ideal environment for grape cultivation

The privileged position of our vineyards guarantees optimal conditions for the development of the grapes. The altitude and exposure favor:

One excellent drainage, essential for root health and fruit quality.

balanced solar irradiation, which ensures a gradual and harmonious maturation.

Thermal excursions between day and night, capable of enhancing the aromatic complexity and the finesse of the grapes.

La tradizione vitivinicola di montefalco

The history of wine in Montefalco has roots going back centuries. It is said that Sagrantino was introduced by Byzantine monks in ancient times, while in the fourteenth century, with the occupation of the city by Todi, the cultivation of Grechetto spread

Today, both of these grape varieties represent the beating heart of Umbrian oenology, witnesses of a tradition that continues to evolve with respect and innovation.

Between history and legend

Emperor Frederick II

At Montefalco history and legend intertwine: it is said that the Emperor Frederick II, the “stupor mundi”, has chosen the name Montefalco for this location, inspired by the numerous hawks, of which he was passionate, who inhabited the area
After a drastic reduction of their presence during the twentieth century, in recent years it has been succefully launched a repopulation project, bringing back the birds of prey that have always watched over these lands.
